From the Desk of the Headmaster;
Our fourth season of school begins at Concordia Academy-Wichita, and with your help we are unlocking the treasures of the ages for our students. How do you help? When you pray for the school, when you contribute your time or money for the furtherance of education among the people you know here in Wichita, you are laying up treasure where the moth does not corrupt. Thinking the other day (as I sometimes indulge myself to do), I recalled that when I was young, I attended the bicentennial celebration by visiting the “freedom train” that was visiting Sioux City. Inside, we saw Wilt Chamberlain’s basketball shoes and Archie Bunker’s chair as well as facsimiles of the declaration of independence and other miscellaneous items relating to the nation’s history. Now you and I stand on the brink of the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the nation. It strikes me that I have been around for over one fifth of the progress of these United States. It adds up.
And what we have to relate to the students has added up for quite a while longer. Each of us has the vocation to pass on what we have been given to the people who come after, those people who one day will look back and realize that they knew someone who could remember the time before iPhones, before computers, all the way back to record players, black and white TV’s and newspapers. It will make them feel a bit dizzy, but also in a hurry to pass these things forward. Vergil depicts the sybil sitting in her drafty cave, trying to keep the leaves of history from blowing around in a chaotic heap.
You will be doing your part this year, as the students of CAW take a two-semester trip through the literature and history of the United States, having studied the reformation and the discovery of the New World last year. You will be helping as they acquire the ancient languages along with modern languages in a school that values eloquence and communication. Your help makes it possible for our students to immerse themselves in the maths and learn the theory of music. You are supporting their catechism as they rehearse the deliverance of God in the life of his people.
Our primary school in Derby will begin the adventure of reading and writing for some, so those young people may inherit what is known, and contribute someday to what may come. First encounters with literature and music, numbers and letters will be happening all year, and you are helping there when you pray and participate. There are many helping at your side.
Starting this year, graduates of Concordia Academy are guaranteed 27,000 dollars per year toward tuition at Concordia University in Seward Nebraska. We are privileged to undertake the vocation of bringing up children in the way they should go. When they are older, you will likely see them at the communion rail. This is, after all, where all history, knowledge, wisdom and love come to the point of significance. The living stones need to be aligned and mortared in the bond we have inherited. May God bless the labors of this year.
